It was a bright Tuesday morning.
Meetings went on as scheduled in the 3rd floor of the building. The alarms went off on the top floors of the building , it is said that some staff on the lower floors ignored it as they thought it was just a drill.
Except that it wasn’t a drill and that Tuesday wasn’t going to be bright forever, It was September 11th , 2001 and it was the 3rd floor of the Twin Tower.
They could have survived.It would go down in history as one of the darkest days of the lives of a nation and they ignored the call!
They suffered from what psychologist would later term as Normalcy Bias
Normalcy Bias usually used in context of natural disasters, is simply underestimating the magnitude of a disaster and going about life in the face of impending disaster.
Deep down you know, you can feel it, but you ignore it!
Things has changed and it’s not the same anymore.
You are going in a mundane cycle again.
Yes, the economy is bad. Yes, I hate my job. It’s no longer fulfilling.
Yes, my business is not moving as fast as I want especially now- That I can totally relate!
You are at that point where you actually believe there is little or nothing that you can do about your current state.
If you have colleagues and friends in a similar situation, bad for you, you all take it as normal.
What can we do?
We even use “churchy” statements; It’s Well!
Life is such a drag!
You know all this but you have told yourself it’s Normal
Man, you need to Wake up and snatch yourself quickly!
You might be suffering from Normalcy Bias.
Life is in cycles and we are in transitions. When we don’t acknowledge the difference in the states, we ALL have a tendency to go into the safest mode, the state of Normalcy!
It is natural to gain comfort and security from that which is familiar and predictable. We are creatures of habit.
Three keys things to watch out for to know if you have slipped into Normalcy Bias or not
When you find that nothing motivates you lately especially about going to work or doing your side hustle or life in general!
You need to watch it.
Yes, I know the boss is annoying, the system isn’t right, the organization is seemingly “cheating” you.
When you cannot get yourself to the point of motivating you and keep an interest on your job, wake up!
Apathy is a lack of feeling, emotion, interest, and concern. Apathy is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation, and/or passion.

One of the challenges that causes complacency at workplace is when you do not feel actively engaged or when your advice is not valued . it’s easy to get demotivated when the environment, people and circumstances around them become intolerable – it begins to take its toll.
Do you find yourself blaming the system and the government, or a circumstance for the shit that you are currently in?
First time, I heard a Human resource person say to me that if I was uncomfortable here (in the organization I worked at the time), I should take a walk.
I was sh*t furious! (And I don’t even use swear words in real life)
What do you mean by that?
I rebuffed angrily, eyes fuming, do you know how this system messed me up?
But I knew ; the organization and I got me to where I was at the time.
Admitting that I was burnt out was one of the hardest thing I had to do.
Admitting that he was right hurt me the most !
I thereafter gave myself permission to get on this journey that I am currently on!
Normalcy Bias is also as result of been burnt out and that changes our view of everything. We begin to see through the tint of our circumstances.
Three quick ways to work through this state:
