How Meeting an Influencer Will Make You Question Everything…

I had a 2pm meeting that was dragging into an hour and half, it was about something rather less important than my scheduled meeting at 4.45 pm with Ms Funke Opeke.

My post about her on LinkedIn had gotten her attention and she had reached out to me and wanted to have a chat.

Are you kidding me!  I was beside myself – I literally read every post on what to say to an influencer, how to conduct yourself and all the likes.

Earlier that morning, I had carefully picked out my clothes, debated between wearing heels or sensible black flats; sensible flats worn. Although I wear heels often despite being a 6 footer, today was too special to entertain any awkwardness especially if I attempt to give Ms. Funke Opeke a side hug (*wink*).

Back to the present…while I attempted to be physically and mentally present at that 2 pm meeting that seemed to take forever, my colleague who was even more excited than I was sent me a message “it’s 3.30pm, wrap up. You are running late!” I smiled at the text. Concluded the meeting and made the 5 minutes’ drive to MainOne Head office with over 20 minutes to spare.

I was ushered into her office at exactly 4.54 pm .She was warm and very welcoming and I had her whole attention to myself for the next 45 minutes there about.

Here are my bullet points from my time with Ms Opeke.

  1. Always be prepared to jot as much as you can when you are at the feet of knowledge. There is nothing like the power of pen and paper. She also had her jotter in front of me and she wrote down points as we discussed, when she seemed to have missed some detail, she asked again and wrote it down. I can only imagine what the other pages of her jotter contains. I carry a handy jotter around with me most times but I often forget to get all details in, we millennials have very short attention span that we forget to actually jot down not to forget!
  1. Don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed, do things one block after the other. You would eventually build the big picture; she said as she drew on her jotter one box over the other to illustrate her point. How often have I gotten stuck and abandoned an idea or a project simply because I got overwhelmed by the size of it?

It’s normal to get stuck, I knew this, but I was hearing it again from a woman who built a multi-million-dollar investment in her company, surely it must count for something! Little wonder I have watched her business model as they created products from first ,the major guys who would buy in bulk now to SMEs; MainOne just created a new product.

Even though they had the capacity in terms of infrastructure to serve all types of users, they took it from the top to the bottom and I see them going really down to individual and family broadband plans.

I have to stop here for now, I would continue the other part of this post in the next post, as I really want to allow us soak in these points so far…

Meanwhile my productivity tip of this post is the Momentum. its an app for your desktop that replaces new tab page with a personal dashboard featuring todo, weather, and inspiration. One more thing , It works with google chrome only.

Try it out and tell me what you think…

See you soon,
