I totally understand the feeling, it’s another Monday and you are totally not excited about going to the office. The traffic, the long boring meeting with management, departmental meetings, the reports, the emails. It’s practically become hellish and head banging.
Meeting your colleagues turned friend at lunch has become some sort of high light of your day. To think this job at one time that seems like a century ago was exciting and took the whole of your life and you didn’t mind because you loved it!
You only wonder why the sudden love hate relationship with your dream job, you frantically look up ads of similar jobs when you can because you think the grass is greener on the other side but you are also weary of the expression not all that ‘glitter is gold’!
In addition, you are constantly wishing management would do this or that and you and your friends have become experts in running a company.
You are not alone!
I was at this point a few months back and as I sought to find what I could control. This singular act has helped me stay sound, rediscover the love for my job and essentially gave me back my sanity and enthusiasm to life. Yes, life, because I spend over a half of my day around commuting to work and actually being at work (2 hours’ traffic to and from + my 9hours for work), it was taking a tow on the quality of my life!
Volunteering means to ‘offer one’s services, present oneself, step forward, come forward, and make oneself available’.
Yes, I know it cost you sweat and time to acquire those skills and some of it comes naturally so why should give it for free? But volunteering takes the focus off you to someone else. One of the reasons you are particularly stressed out and bored with your job which you now more of a routine/chore is because you have mastered the job and you have no new challenges to tackle. Since the mind works by seeking new experiences and you are not providing one, you become naturally less enthusiastic about your job.
So instead of seating in your pity party, get involved in being a help to someone else.

Volunteer within your company:
After you are done with your own tasks and you know you can accommodate other tasks to do, come forward to help another group or department. Check with your line head though to be sure it that you can help in your free time.
Volunteer to an actual Non Profit physically
Lagos can be hard so I know the idea of volunteering during week day with all the traffic back from work can be crazy but if it’s actually achievable for you, find a place to volunteer your skills, talent and time and trust me you would be better for it.

I have a thing for writing and volunteering with the shelter has given an opportunity to express that by creating content and telling the stories of the girls.This for me is so rewarding as it gives me insight of what some other people are going through and I suddenly realize I’m not alone and I appreciate my life right now, and it also exposes me to much more. I also have met great people here and am improving on my writing which might become a career in another life. I do not know just yet. Bottom-line: I can do more: my job at work and at the shelter. Finding ways to creatively tell the stories of the foundation pumps my juices.
Compare sulking and totally hating your life because you consider yourself stuck on the job and getting to help other people. It helps challenge your mind and stirs up some creativity and enthusiasm which might just be what you really need at this moment and not necessary a job change.
If all else fails…look within, dig deeper!
