Want to be successful? Stop the Ostrich Mimicking

Are you burying your head in the sand ?


You might be overlooking your currency to succeed

I was at a training through last week and I knew there would be a change in my life and yes there was!

In the course of the training; it was Human resources related, I learnt about the HR competences and it occurred to me; these should be competences not only for HR but for all professions.

The HR competency model says:

Knowledge +Behavior = Success

During my 30 Minutes free consultation, I realized that with each person I have worked, one thing has been recurrent, when I asked the question;

“Who do you think you need to be to be where you want to be in your career/business?”

Most of the answers I got were summed up into one of these:

I need to get more skill in my core competence!

I need to get certified in a particular niche.

Which are not in itself a bad idea. In fact, it’s a great idea because career branding or self-marketing is all about selling your “Skilled Self”.

“ A person’s career brand is not how the person sees himself or herself. A career brand is a perception of the person’s skills and capabilities in the minds of other people, most notably, employers and colleagues.”

So are you been an ostrich by digging your head in the hole of knowledge alone and not developing the other very key ingredients to success?

Let’s take on the competencies piece by piece to be adopted to arrive at a successful career.

Relationship management

This especially for my technical people, I have a technical background; so I know how we easily we are so into people like us a lot: Grow and learn how to manage relationships- manage interactions with specific goal of providing service & contributing to the success of the organization or the people you serve. It is counterproductive that you’re very skilled self cannot handle relationships to achieve a desired goal. Remember, career branding is about people’s perception of you and your work!


An almost ambiguous word, consulting is simply put providing expert /informed advice in a particular field or niche. As a skilled professional, you need to start to see yourself as solution provider even if you are an employee and provide expert solution in a simple manner to provide guidance to the organization.


As a professional, you need to be able direct initiatives that lead to the overall success of the organization. You also need ability to gain buy-in from all your stakeholders


Ability to effectively “exchange and create a free flow of information useful to the various stakeholders at all levels to produce impactful results. If you need to learn new skills for speaking well, report writing, powerful powerpoints and other presentation skills, PLEASE DO!

Go find online courses or check youtube to learn and development.

Global & Cultural Effectiveness 

Be Intentionally Global mind; know what is happening in your industry. Be aware! Don’t bury your head in the sand!

Ethical Practice

You need to integrate your core values in how you do everything. Core values such as integrity, accountability, tenacity etc.

Business Acumen

Understand the business of your industry. Know the numbers; how does your job affect your overall organization, get knowledgeable. No excuses.

Critical Thinking

Develop the ability to analyze by connecting information together, evaluate the credibility of statements, explain by adding clarity and interpret by communicating the meaning of information.

On this journey to success by growing one’s personal/ career branding, it’s imperative to develop these skills along the way, plus your core technical skills.

Only then would you have something better to trade with.

You become a successful brand !
